The Wildcat Behind Our House CatsThe African wildcat is, in essence, the cat behind all domestic cats. Cat domestication began about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, when wildcats were drawn to early human settlements by rodents around stored grain. Over time, this mutually beneficial relationship led to the domestic cat, Felis catus. Unlike many domesticated animals, cats largely self-domesticated, gradually adapting to life alongside humans while retaining many wild traits. The African wildcat still exists today, serving as a living link to this shared history. |
